Replacing my Tyres: How & When?
Unfortunately, when it comes to replacing your tyres, there is no way to tell exactly how long they may or may not last. The lifespan of a tyre depends on a few things, including the drivers habits, the state of the road and the level of maintenance carried out on the tyres.
There are multiple reasons why you may need to replace your tyres, and it may be a good idea to get it checked over by a professional beforehand, who can advise you if youre tyres will need to be replaced, or if they can be repaired.
If youre tyre is punctured, you may not need to replace it. Contact a specialist, who will be able to let you know if the inner tube has been damaged. If it has, unfortunately the tyre is irreparable and will need to be replaced.
If youre tyre has been damaged for any reason and has resulted in cuts, slashes or bulges, your tyres will need to be looked over by a professional. Again, it may not need to be replaced but if you do notice any of your tyres are impaired, you must not drive.
Has your tyre worn down to the legal wear limit? The Highway Code states that the minimum legal wear limit is 1.6mm, but even if the remaining tread depth is higher than this, you can adapt your driving style to help.
There are a
whole bunch of reasons why you may need your tyres repaired or replaced, but contacting a professional to recommend your next point of action is always advised. A specialist will be able to determine whether or not you can repair your tyre rather than replacing it, which could save you money!
Half of Brits dont know how to change a tyre, but its easy to learn how to do so yourself by simply following the steps in your vehicles manual. Alternatively, a reputable mechanic can always help you if need be. If you are needing to replace one of your tyres, make sure you enquire about the condition of your other tyres before you agree to purchase a full set. Replacing four tyres at once will cost twice the amount, and the tyres may have a long lifespan left!
Never buy one tyre at a time and always get another new one for the opposite side of the vehicle. A great tip would be to get an alignment on your vehicle after installing new tyres, to help extend their lifespan. Accurately aligned tyres will wear evenly, helping them to last longer.
