Driving Tips to Reduce Wear and Tear
Whether your MOT is just around the corner, or you are
looking for ways to bring down your vehicle maintenance costs, these driving
tips will help you to reduce wear and tear on your tyres, brakes, clutch,
engine and more.
Drive carefully within
the speed limit
If you are in a hurry, it is tempting to push the boundaries
of the speed limit in order to reach your destination on time. Not only is this
illegal, it also causes unnecessary wear on your tyres. The brakes also need to
work much harder to bring your car to a complete stop.
Keep Tyres at the
Correct Pressure
Take a look at your owners manual to find out the
recommended tyre pressure, and check your tyres on a monthly basis to keep them
correctly inflated. Tyres that are not inflated correctly will puncture more
easily and are going to wear down quickly, whereas over inflated tyres will
cause problems with braking and handling.
Dont ignore changes
Is the car driving differently to normal? Hearing an unusual
noise? If you notice an abnormality in your vehicle while driving, visit your
local garage just to check everything is okay. It is better to fix a small
problem now than suffer more permanent or expensive damage later.
Change gear at the
right time
After years of driving, we can all slip into habits that are
not good for the car we drive. One of these can be revving too high or too low
this causes strain on the engine and will also waste fuel. Reduce the risk of
damage to your vehicle by listening to the engine and changing gear at the
right time.
Switch off in traffic
jams
Turning off the engine while stuck in traffic has many
advantages. First, it is better for the engine to switch it off and then on
again it is not healthy to keep the engine idle in a jam. Secondly, while the
engine is off you are also saving your clutch and brakes.
Attend extra driving
courses
Whether you consider yourself a good driver or you are fully
aware of your bad habits, a driving course is ideal for picking up tips for
more economical driving. By attending refresher lessons, Pass Plus or a
motorway driving course, you will not only become a more responsible driver but
you could also save money on your insurance costs.
Get regular services
If you want to reduce wear and tear on your car to help with
passing your MOT, we recommend having regular services to keep everything in
good condition. A service is not too expensive, and can take care of minor
issues that if left unacknowledged could cause more serious damage to the car.
